The vice president Dr. Isatou Touray on Saturday 23rd March, 2019 presided over the handing over ceremony of food items and other materials donated by Spanish NGO Amigos De Gambia to the Tanka Tanka psychiatric hospital
She embarked on a conducted tour of the Tanka Tanka psychiatric hospital with officials of the Spanish Philanthropic Organization Amigos de Gambia and the ministry of health and social welfare. The visit was part of a handing over ceremony of food and medical items donated by Amigos De Gambia.
During the visit, the vice president examined facilities including the male and female wings as well as the kitchen and interacted with patients and staff of the hospital in order to gather firsthand information. During her discussion with patients, they complained about the quality of food they are served.
For the staff of the hospital, they pleaded with the vice president through the ministry of health to provide them with more personnel. Responding to their concerns, the vice president expressed concern with the youthfulness of most of the patients and the state of the kitchen but assured them of government’s unflinching support and said plans are afoot to provide mobility for the hospital.
Delivering the donated items, Jose Luis Flores head of Amigos De Gambia said his organization has been rendering support to needy communities in the Gambia for over a decade now and is pleased to partner with the ministry of health.
For her part, the Vice president express delight at receiving the donated items. Government she said, is proud to partner with Amigos De Gambia saying the donated items will go a long way in improving the conditions of patients at the hospital.
Meanwhile, the Chief Medical Officer of the EFSTH Dr. Amadou Samateh said supporting people with mental health problems should be everyone’s business. He said it will require concerted efforts to surmount challenges in the health sector.
