The Global Monitoring for Environment and Security in Africa (GMES) project funded by EU through AU was launched by the Ministry of Fisheries and Water Resources in Banjul 21st March, 2019.
The Global Monitoring for Environment and Security (GMES), an initiative of the European Union and the European Space Agency (ESA) developed to provide, sustainable, reliable and timely services related to environmental and security issues in order to support the needs of users and public policymakers.
The permanent secretary at the ministry of fisheries Dr Bamba Banja said The Gambia has been facing lots of challenges in combating illegal, unregulated and unreported fishing activities that cost loss of revenue for the country. Therefore, the launching of this project which the ministry was yarning for will greatly help the fisheries sector and also strengthen our work in combating illegal and unregulated fishing in the country.
He acknowledged the importance of fisheries in the national social development of The Gambia and therefore urged all and sundry to play our role in ensuring a sustainable fisheries sector that will benefit and continued to increase the socio economic development of the Gambia he stated.
Banja added that, the ministry is currently negotiating the procuring a state of the earth and efficient fishing inspection vessel that the navy will be using in order to help them in their monitoring and surveillance activities.
Speaking for Wetlands International Africa Gabin Agblonon Project Manager said the project wil benefit The Gambia by equipping its fishery sector seeks to help to enhancing the governmental technical skills, coastal management and maritime transport, fisheries ministries, safety and security as well as environment protection agencies by improving communication coastal marine environment and its resources.
Gabin noted, the initiative the Africa Space Policy and Strategy, under the AU Agenda 2063 framework, focusing on creating a well-coordinated and integrated African Space Programme and a regulatory environment that promote and support an African agenda.
