Honesty has this to reveal to me and anyone listening to these messages. Gambia is country where a "toxic motto" is left to spread all over which we should stop or else the result will end up angering our creator. What is the toxic motto? "Don't speak the truth as people don't like it"
Any society that does not like the truth has one choice left and that is liking lies! Our society is one of the most interesting and intriguing ones in this world! It is where falsehood is being twinned with nationhood. What a paradox!
We live in a society where citizenship and patriotism remain captives of mesmerising speeches pegged on selfishness and what is cosmetic in the psyche of that very society. A society that thinks it is apar with modernity when in reality our mindset is 150 years behind the Pendule of evolution. It is equally where behaviour, adaptation, ethics, remaining compliant to the true meaning of an exemplary character is more alien than being the twin of performance on the ground.
Gambia is where complains and blames have formed an alloy in a lethargic lot yet we expect progress! Isn't that contradictory to all universally recognised norms? Especially where building a nation is to be put into its proper perspective!
You see folks it's not the wish of anyone to remain in a fighting mode but the need to stand against what makes one an arch critic is far from being away! What must be revived is the urge to speak truth to each other before we all face a destiny with regrets.
Pushing files, attending meetings, endless travels with no back to office reports that are containing convincing achievements is incompatible with effective services anywhere where in the world! Perdiems without results still remains here. Mirages and concrete results are not the same. We cannot avoid speaking the truth yet expect progress!
We cannot avoid accountability yet expect progress.
We cannot avoid addressing issues like a solid foreign policy yet expect respect in the outside world. We cannot shy away from speaking our minds against anomaly only to keep our jobs or convenience yet want to convince the citizens that we took oaths and are honest to service!
We cannot continue misusing the meaning of so called "oaths of secrecy" where the stench in some places is unbearable. At this juncture my eyes are filled with tears because I remember the late Dr Badara Alieu Joof's maiden speech. What pains me more is that some of us were and are still happy that Joof who was a "pest" for many is no longer on the line of action. Badara was indeed good news for the establishment.
Like him or hate him he was a force to reckon with and an agent of change for the good of all.
Wollaahii those who play it safe to avoid the hack or sack where they are expected to remain honest to leadership are the very ones who derail leadership.
