Renowned journalist Abdoulahi Mendy alias Pacco has expressed his willingness to join the political arena as a National Assembly Member for Old Yundum Constituency. He made this revelation on Monday 13th February, 2017 at his residence in Sinchu Alhagie.
A Gambian by birth, Abdoulahi was born on the 1st of September, 1977 in Banjul. He attended St. Therese Primary and St. Georges Primary, St. Peters Junior School and later to St. Edwards Junior School before travelling to neighboring Senegal to further his studies and training at the British Senegalese Institute (BSI) which is an international journalism centre.
Mr. Mendy attributed his willingness to serve as a national assembly member for Old Yundum constituency to many factors citing numerous reasons among which is the constituency’s strategic location and the importance it’s accorded in the country’s history. And as per the constitutional challenge that every citizen should contribute towards the country’s development.
He cited the unfavorable laws and agreements made by previous and current NAMS on behalf of the people which contributed little to the improvement of livelihoods. And their failure to initiate projects to meet the demands of the people they represent.
Abdoulahi argued that if the right mechanisms were employed, Old Yundum Constituency would have been an important Tourism Development Area (TDA). He also believes Kombo North district has the capacity to operate as a municipality given its population and strategic location.
Mendy vowed to contest for Old Yundum Constituency either as an Independent candidate but that he is open to and is interested in any political party that wish to nominate him. He further stated that there is a lot of miss representation in the assembly as NAMs represented more of their party’s interest than the electorates which created a lot of gaps in the development of Kombo North and The Gambia as a whole.
Mr. Mendy believed that if elected he will use his Journalistic experience and development aspirations to join hands with other NAMs to develop not only Old Yundum Constituency but The Gambia in general.
Abdoulahi developed his journalism career from Senegal starting with Manoore FM as an Assistant Studio Operator, Radio Television Senegalaise (RTS) Technician, RTS Radio Kolda as a Studio Operator and News Presenter, Radio Dunyaa as Editor and News Presenter. He returned to The Gambia and worked with Unique FM as a Managing Director, Taranga FM as a Programs Manager, Eye Africa Online TV as an Administrator, Paradise FM Basse as a Regional Manager and finally GRTS TV as an international correspondent in Dakar Embassy and Basse, Upper River Region.
He is fluent in English, French, Mandinka, Wolof, Fula, Creole and Manjako (Mother tongue) and is married with one wife and 7 children.
