The Independent Electoral Commission accepted the nomination of Adama Barrow of the Opposition coalition held on Wednesday 9th November, 2016 at the IEC headquarter in Bertil Harding Highway, Kanifing.
The coalition comprises of UDP, PDOIS, PPP, NRP, GMC, GPDP, NCP, and the Independent candidate joined thousands of loyal party militants and the media witness the process.
Mr. Alieu Momar Njai congratulated Adama Barrow for producing all the necessary nomination criteria for the presidential election 2016 which include being a Gambian Citizen, completed senior secondary school, must be an ordinary resident in The Gambia for the past 5 years, must be above 30 years old but not more than 65 years, be endorsed by more than 5000 registered voters in which 200 must be in all the 7 administrative areas of The Gambia, declaration of his personal assets, issues his tax clearance from GRA, deposited D500 000 to the IEC account, a party symbol, color, picture, party manifesto, campaign itinery.
He emphasised that the Gambia has the best electoral process which cannot be rigged no matter because all the aspiring candidates will expect to sent in their agents throughout all the allocated 1400 polling station for this election in which all the results will be counted on the spots and signed by the agents before transported to the IEC headquarters for announcement.
Mr. Njai noted that it is a responsibility for not only IEC but to all candidates to advise their supporters to preach a violent free election.
Mr. Njai congratulated Adama Barrow for fulfilling all the criteria set for the nomination and therefore declared him fit for stand for presidency but subjected to scrutiny on Friday 11th November, 2016 in which any complaint or related anything that was not properly done would be communicated to him.
After his nomination, Adama Barrow thanked almighty Allah for making this day a success and extend appreciation to the other party candidates for greatly supporting him to achieve their desired ambition which is to instigate change in the presidency come December 1st polls.
Adama similarly echoed confident towards Alieu Momar Njai as a trustworthy, honesty and dedicated to serve without partially since when he was contesting for the National Assembly Election in 2007 for Jimara Constituency, since then he admired his high sense of responsibility towards the system.
He maintained that since the party sympathisers requested for presidential candidates to set aside their individual and part interest and join force and form a unified candidate which is really done, he then urged supporters to join hands and come out unanimously and vote to install the coalition into salvaging Gambians from 22 years of misrule and hardship from the APRC.
Mr. Barrow reechoed that, he will do his best to make sure the agreement made by the coalition be fulfill and represent all Gambians.
For his part Mr. Amat NK Bah called on all loyal supporters should make a good and peaceful campaign free from inflammatory words/ speeches that President Jammeh can use as an excuse to rigged the polls or disrupt the already planned victory.
Mr. Bah maintained that politics is a peaceful game which can be use to sell your agenda and ideologies for people to comprehend and vote for you. “We have all the required knowledge and expertise that is needed to guide our brother to achieve our goals” He claimed.
Dr. Isatou Touray said change is in everyone’s lips and is much needed to change not only the living conditions of Gambians but to everyone residing in the country.
