The National Convention of the Opposition Parties recently had their election to select a flag bearer for the 1st December, 2016 held at the Jaama Hall, Kairaba Beach Hotel last Sunday 31st October, 2016.
Addressing the gathering, Mr. Dembo Bojang and Madam Fatoumatta Jallow Tambajang expressed gratitude towards all the parties’ presidential candidate for amicably setting aside their personal differences and interest and follow the collective goal of removing the incumbent and praised the loyalty of the 490 delegate from all the 7 administrative areas of the Gambia representing NRP, NCP, PDOIS, PPP, UDP, GPDP, GMC, and observers.
During the event, Madam Jallow Tambajang stated that four of the parties presidential flag bearers sought interest in representing the coalition for the election namely Amat NK Bah of National Reconciliation Party (NRP), Halifa Sallah of Peoples Democratic Organization for Independent and Socialism (PDOIS), Lamin B Bojang of National Convention Party (NCP) and Adama Barrow of United Democratic Party (UDP) where both delivered their motivational speech seeking the post.
Hon. Samba Jallow NAM and minority leader in the assembly said the delegates were exposed to the procedures of the voting exercise which a ballot box is bearing the photos of the entire aspiring candidate in which the each delegates are given four photos to choose one and drop it inside an envelope while the remaining photos are disposed in a dust bin.
Mr. Jallow told the gathering the gathering that they were requested for the coalition and its already done after all the party heads agreed on it, now it’s high time for the community to join hand and make a difference in this election.
He highlighted that party militants of all the agreed opposition parties that they requested for all the party heads to put aside all their interest and have the single one of removing President Jammeh and his government. He told delegates that it’s now their turn to pay dividend to the request make to party leaders achieved their desire goal.
After the voting and counting of the already casted votes, Madam Fatoumatta Jallow who was appointed returning officer for the election said, “I Madam Fatoumatta Jallow Tambajang, the returning officer hereby certifies and declares the results as follows: number of votes registered is 490; total number of invalid votes counted 2, total number of valid votes 485, Dr. Lamin Bojang of the NCP got 40 votes, Halifa Sallah of PDOIS 65 votes, Amat Bah of NCP 72 votes and Adama Barrow of UDP 308 votes,” she disclosed.
Amat NK Bah expressed acknowledged and accepted the results of the election as free and fair and represented the choice of the delegate, while assuring his utmost supports to Adama Barrow in order to successfully win in this forth coming election.
He emphasized that, selecting a flag bearer is simple but the most difficult work is ahead which is the remaining 800, 000 voting in The Gambia especially those in other remaining parties like the APRC. He called on all the aspiring candidates to joining the crusade in order to defeat the incumbent with a clear margin as united.
Halifa Sallah also expressed sentiments and vowed that, the opposition is now stronger than before because they is no more individual parties during this period and their collective interest should be joining power, ideology, and interest.
In his acceptance speech Adama Barrow thanked delegates for having the trust in him vowed that the success of this coalition is to come out and salvage Gambians in this mess done by the APRC government.
He said that he will be loyal to the coalition and respects the agreement signed by all concerned parties so as to achieve their desire objective through serving for 3 years and go in for an election to elect a president.
Mr Darboe also praised his counterparts for creating the enabling environment for the success of this coalition and prayed for their success while calling all and sundry to join hands and work for victory.
