A New Borehole was recently inaugurated in the Community of Medina Nema-Su in the west coast region. The borehole was sponsored by the Nigerian contingent in The Gambia under the ECOMIG peacekeeping mission Sunday 17th November, 2019.
The new borehole was inaugurated in a colourful ceremony attended by dignitaries from Area Council. The Community of Medina Nema-Su showed gratitude and appreciation for having one of the greatly needed social facility as there is only one source of water, a well, which they all depend on. All the other wells have run dry.
A Community Youth Mobilizer, Alagie Njie, speaking on behalf of the Alkalo Kebba Jobe, thanked the Nigerian ECOMIG Contingent for their valuable contribution, which will now provide clean, drinking water the community. He further explains some of the challenges they face.
Alagie thanked the ECOMIG Nigerian contingent for assisting them with water being one of the most urgent need of the community of Baffuloto Medina Nema-Su, saying water is the most important thing that all human beings need and will go along way in creating a healthy living.
Njie noted, the village said though some part of the village had electricity but operating on a very low voltage to the extent that it cannot even charge a battery. "We are appealing to the Gambian government to help us address the situation, as good electricity can easily transform the lives of people especially our economic status".
Ndey Mboob, a women’s representative, expressed delight for having such an essential help which will benefit the entire community especially women, who are mostly responsible for taking care of the family’s water needs. She expressed delight for for providing clean drinking water which they always prayed for and its now a dream come true.
She furthered noted that, the community also faces other challenges especially health centre and market as women faces difficulties when in labor and hospitals are far. They either go to Brikama, Banjulnding or Kanifing
For his part, Major A.Y Abubakar, the Commanding Officer for Operations, speaking on behalf of Lieutenant Colonel M.T Nagudu, shed light on their objectives in helping communities. he said, the Nigerian ECOMIG Contingent Company 4 has been contributing in uplifting the lives of many communities by providing social services. This is part of fulfilling ECOWAS’ mandate in cooperating with civilian populations.
The Councillor for Kembujeh Ward, Alieu K. Darboe, thanked the Nigerian ECOMIG Contingent for complimenting the efforts of Brikama Area Council whose role is to provide such necessities to the people. He went on to explain his position with regards to serving the people in his ward.
