TRAINING GEARED TOWARD DEVELOPING THE COMPETENCIES OF CSOS IN MANAGING BUDGETS MORE EFFECTIVELY, PROJECT MANAGEMENT, AND EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATIONS AROUND CLIMATE CHANGE REPORTING, AHEAD OF A MAJOR UN CLIMATE CHANGE CONFERENCE, COP26.
This training is a result of a capacity assessment survey conducted with heads of Gambian CSOs in climate change and recognising that the civil society community represents a critical constituency and development partner for advancing environmental developments in the region.
Kemo Fatty Co-founder Green Up Gambia, it is important for the Civil Society Organizations to build their capacity in order to effectively lead in social change issues. So the main thing we can be able to do is to acquire the necessary skills and knowledge that is required to implement these actions in the country and also have a better understanding of a Global Climate challenges.
The training exposed environment related CSOs to existing funds for their projects such as the Global Environment Facility GEF, which provides grants of up to USD 50,000 directly to CSOs and community-based organizations (CBOs) to undertake local projects that contribute to the global environment while generating sustainable livelihoods.
Fatoumatta Touray from Great Institute, in tackling climate challenges, one of the things we need is finance. Despite The Gambia receiving support from the International bodies and developed countries, I believe there is more to be done because countries that re least developing like Gambia are highly affected by climate change challenges.
She went on, understanding how to receive support and how to utilize the support to implement the solutions to climate change challenges is very important.
British High Commissioner David Belgrove says CSOs have a stake in making the COP26 a success. I am delighted to see the attendants from the Civil Society Organizations who are involved in the environment and climate change campaigns to encourage governments to change their policies and bring in the ones that which will address the effects of Climate Change.
COP26, the next annual UN climate change conference, The Conference of the Parties, will be held in the United Kingdom from 1st to 12th November, 2021. The summit will bring these parties together to accelerate action towards the goals of the Paris Agreement and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
In June 2017, President Trump withdrew the United States from the Paris Agreement. This was seen as a big blow to achieving the aims of tackling climate change. As there is now a change of administration in the USA, it remains to be seen whether President Biden will signal a return to the Agreement and attend the summit.
