You have our backing, because what Islam dictates us is that whoever Allah appoints to be your leader, follow him if he is good or bad. We have seen that you are a good president. You are good for us, we thank Allah and praying to him for your progress.
While addressing the president, some of the Imams praised him for his leadership qualities, contributing to Islam, and for the development of the country.
This is what we believe. Those of us who are in Banjul, have an open mind and we are very happy with the President. We realise that the development work he is doing, shows that he is working for the sake of Allah. And someone who is doing that, you must give him your support. That is why we are here.
Amie Ndure, an Islamic teacher, and Aminata Barrow, appeal to the President for his intervention to establish a tertiary institution of learning for Muslim women and to provide scholarships to support their education across the country.
You are an honest person, with humility, everyone knows that. We have seen that you have given Islam its due, so we are hopeful that you will work towards addressing the problems of us women, because all women in this country are interested in education.
We are asking the government to help us to have Islamic centres in all regions, where women can learn the Qur’an, and about the Islamic religion.
Among the Islamic leaders who spoke was Imam Chebu Cham, who talks about the duty of the president towards the people and the role of people to pray and support him, which is critical for a country’s development.
