The national broadcaster, GRTS, was among state-owned enterprises to present activity and financial report to the national assembly’s public enterprise committee, which, on Monday 25th January, 2021, began consideration of the report for the 2019 fiscal year.
Responding to questions from the Public Enterprise Committee, the chairperson of the Board of Directors for GRTS Fatou Jagne Senghore, says like any other state enterprise, GRTS needs the support of the government to perform as expected, adding that the state broadcaster cannot compete with private entities.
According to Abdou MK Touray Director General GRTS, says payment of the levy on GSM companies, which the greatly rely on to fund their operations have been inconsistent. The challenges GRTS has been facing are many and the support which is to come from the Levy on GSM companies is not sustainable to keep the public broadcaster going and that is the reality. Some of them usually have arrears and we have to run after them for a long time before they pay those levies.
The committee’s consideration has been adjourned until further notice due to time constraints. The Social Security Housing Finance Corporation also appeared before the National Assembly’s Public Enterprise Committee without a financial report.
The Committee has given them up to 15 February to submit their 2019 financial activity report for consideration.
