Following a widespread rumors of a group of people calling on the President of The Gambia Adama barrow to honour the promised made during the 2016 presidential campaign, A civil society group called themselves 3Years Jotna wish to have a peaceful demonstration in December, 2019.
Marie Antoinette Corr, General Secretary of Gambia Teachers Union expressed concern over the pending demonstration and urged members to continue with their normal teaching duties and desist from any industrial actions.
"In view of the ongoing uncertainties, members of the Union are hereby urged to continue with their normal teaching duties and desist from any industrial actions, unless otherwise sanctioned by the GTU," madam Corr said.
She also urged school administrators to advise their students to refrain from taking any undue risk that may jeopadise their education.
She added: "Management has learnt with deep regret that some schools have allegedly favourably reacted to this scenario by altering their end of term exams timetable which is quite unfortunate."
Marie Antoinette Corr said the union will continue to observe the due processes, systems and mechanisms. "And should it warrant them to embark on any sort of industrial actions, the GTU will duly advise them accordingly."
The GTU secretary general urged all members to exercise restraint.
"The Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education is hereby urged to specify the closing and opening of schools for the incoming Terms for clarity purpose, she concludes.
