The Gambia Teachers Union Young Teachers Platform have join the rest in mourning the loss of more than 50 Gambian youth whose lives perished in the Atlantic Ocean while trying to reach Europe through a boat.
"With a heavy heart, we extend our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families", Alhagie B. Sama Interim Chairman at Gambia Teachers Union stated ina release on Thursday.
Sama explained that it's Union sees the loss of these lives "as one of the greatest lost the nation has ever incurred in history". He added that it is of shock that these young lives lost at sea were on a journey in search of greener pastures.
The interim Chairman further call on the government through the Ministry of Youth and Sports to be more proactive and give due attention to issues that are of greater national concern.
He however, stressed that the government should give more priority and attention to young people as they constitute the greater percentage of the country’s population.
"We, as a nation cannot and shouldn’t sit and watch our young people’s lives continue to perish at sea just for the search of better living conditions." Sama echoed.
He also call the National Youth Council and all relevant stakeholders to take their key positions in executing their functions for the interest of the young people in the country.
"On behalf of the entire young teachers in the country, we again pray that Allah grant the departed souls a resting place in Jannah", He said.
