The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Gambians Abroad signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Indian Ministry of External Affairs on Monday 1st November, 2021.
The Ministers had a tete-a-tete and bilateral talks, during which cooperation modalities were discussed, followed by the ministers signing cooperation agreements.
The agreements seek to deepen the existing bilateral relations between Banjul and New Delhi and facilitate structured and systematic engagement for the governments of the two countries. A General Framework Agreement and Visa Exemption agreements for diplomatic or official passport holders are also signed.
India is the Gambia’s third largest trading partner, with trade value at around 170 million Dalasis. India's External Affairs minister Muraleedharan, believes that there remains untapped potential.
He noted that, the purpose of the visit is to maintain the momentum in the exchange of high level bilateral visits and continue to work to deepen and widen bilateral relations which was re-amplified during The President of India, Mr. Ram Nath Kovind state visit in July-August 2019.
He explained that, Earlier in March 2019, The Gambian Minister of Foreign Affairs Dr. Tangara had visited India in the context of 10th Anniversary of establishment of the Gambian High Commission in New Delhi. My present visit is to review the progress achieved on various action points emanating from the historic visit of our President to The Gambia and to take forward our relations to the next level.
Foreign affairs minister Tangara, on behalf of president Adama Barrow, commend the Indian government for its partnership with the Gambia for national development. As a development partner he said, India supports the Gambia in health, agriculture, energy, and education.
Minister Tangara described India as the most popular destination for Gambians seeking medical treatment and smoothen the agreement will enable the two countries to support each other's candidature to various UN bodies.
This visit by the External Affairs minister, is the second high-profile visit by an Indian government official in just over two years. In July 2019, India’s President Ram Nath Kovind paid a three-day official visit to The Gambia to highlight the strong bilateral ties between the two countries.
