The Village Development Committee of Fass Njaga Choi in collaboration with Helping Charity Foundation on Sunday 1st march, 2020 inaugurated their new Maternity Ward.
The construction of the Maternity Ward was initiated and started by the VDC who erected the foundation and then the Helping Charity Foundation came to their aid by investing over D700,000 which led to the completion of the facility. The maternity ward consists of one big outpatient room, two delivery rooms and two office spaces.
Awa Bojang, speaking on behalf of the women, says the entire women within the locality have a cause to celebrate as having such a maternity ward has been a dream in their lives for decades. She thanked the Helping Charity Foundation for the giant support and went on to explain some of the challenges the Clinic is facing which includes lack of a night watchman, launderers amongst others.
Babucarr Nyang, the Deputy Chairman of Helping Charity Foundation’s Board of Directors, explains the significance of having the Maternity Ward in the locality. He went on to shed light on some of their plans for the future. He said infant mortality on the other hand, though significantly dropped from 75 to 34 deaths per 1000 live births during the periods 2001 to 2013, still falls short of the global target of at least 25 deaths per 1000 live births.
Rosemary Woodali, a Committee Member of Helping Charity Foundation says the successful completion of the Maternity Ward came as a result from the efforts of both Fass Njaga Choi’s VDC and the Helping Charity Foundation staff and Committee. She went on to explain some of the activities the Charity does in the area of Education.
She imformed that, Helping Charity Foundation over a decade the Charity has been providing sponsorship to over 400 students in the Gambia out of whom 100 students are from Fass Njaga Choi. Their sponsorship concentrates on hardworking students who come from poor families ranging from Nursery, Lower Basic, Secondary, College and University.
The Permanent Secretary under the Ministry of Health, Muhamadou Lamin Jaiteh, says the construction of the Maternity Ward is a clear manifestation of complementing the Health Ministry’s efforts. He calls on the people residing in the locality to exercise patience as the Ministry through its reform program will come to their aid.
PS Jaiteh, noted that his ministry's is passionate and interest in reaching out to communities across the country and facilitating quality health care services and bringing health care services to the doorstep of every Gambian. “Lots of things are in the pipeline to strengthen community health facilities in the country,” he said.
