The Secretary General and Leader of the National People’s Party, President Adama Barrow, is quite confident of a landslide victory in 2021, after Saturday’s outcome in the Niamina West and Kerr Jarga Ward By-elections. The President made the claim on Monday in Banjul where NPP supporters gathered to celebrate the victories.
Supporters and well wishers of the registered but, yet-to-be launched National People’s Party (NPP) converged at the Arch in Banjul to celebrate the weekend‘s by-election victory in the Niamina West for a National Assembly seat and Kerr Jarga Ward councillorship, after NPP’s Birom S Sowe and Awa Gaye, respectively, were officially declared winner.
Addressing an event characterized by political statements and entertainment by different groups, President Barrow, while congratulating Birom Sowe and Awa Gaye, thanked the people of Niamina and Jokadou for voting for the NPP. He appeared confident that victory for NPP in 2021 is a forgone conclusion, saying “this is just the tip of the iceberg.”
Despite being the first MP under the NPP ticket, President Barrow reminded Birom Sowe to note that there are other MPs he can work with as they also share the same vision with his government.
The NPP Leader commended his campaign teams for delivering on their promises, while congratulating all the candidates who contested the elections. He extend an opened arm to all Gambians to join the NPP for the development of country.
Scores of speakers including Mambajick Njie, NPP’s Administrative Secretary, Dou Sanneh and Siaka Jatta, both NPP bigwigs, thanked everyone who supported the campaign process and those who voted for the NPP candidates.
Their messages were similar, as they warned other political parties to brace up for a landslide victory for NPP at the next election.
They expressed their determination and capability to take over the strongholds of their opponents, saying the politics of insult and bullying are not the solution.
Birom Sowe, the newly elected National Assembly Member for Niamina West and AWA Gaye, the Councillor for Kerr Jarga Ward were grateful to the NPP top echelon, campaign teams, supporters and everyone who stood by them.
The victory, according to them, is not just for the people of their areas, but all supporters of NPP and the country.
They also used the occasion to call on every Gambian to join the NPP for what they called “the progress and development of the country.”
A veteran politician, Dembo “By Force” Bojang, the National President of NPP, describes the latest victories in Niamina West and Kerr Jarga as historic for the NPP. Bojang says President Barrow is quite aware of the development needs of the people and is committed to delivering the goods to the people. “A big shock awaits those preparing to challenge President Barrow in 2021,” Bojang told the crowd.
However, most political analysts say the Niamina West is a very small constituency and as such cannot be used as a barometer for the whole country.
Hamat NK Bah, the leader of the National Reconciliation Party, a party that backed the NPP in the elections, was full of praise for President Barrow, saying the outcome is just a signal ahead of 2021.
Bah was among the bigwigs in Niamina West to canvass support for Birom Sowe, and indeed they didn’t disappoint their leader, President Barrow, who, he said, has been very supportive before, during and after the election.
To the Barrow Campaign Team 2021, Hamat NK Bah, says the recent victories should reenergize them, as it is not the end of the journey. The results, he says, has exposed the weaknesses of some of the self-claimed big guns.
At the start of the event, there was a minute of silence prayer for the late Lamin R Darboe, deputy governor of CRR and a former strong NPP supporter, who passed away last week.
Also joining the celebration was the Vice President Dr Isatou Touray, Cabinet ministers and the party’s bigwigs. The event wrapped-up with the President handing a brand new pick-up to Birom Sowe, a similar gesture he extended to other MPs in 2017.
