The Ministry of Health with support from The Vaccines Alliance (GAVI) organized a press briefing to sensitize the public on the ongoing countrywide Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) Immunization exercise held at the Central Medical Store in Kotu 29th November, 2019.
The event is expected to raise awareness on the issues concerning the prevention, treatment and management of Cervical Cancer in women, targeting girls between the ages of 9 to 13.
Buya Jallow, Immunization Officer UNICEF congratulated Gambia for being the second country in West Africa to launch the HPV vaccines which could help in the fight against Cervical Cancer. She said UNICEF is responsible for procuring the HPV Vaccines has gone through extensive research, testing and passed all WHO requirements and standards.
In making this vaccination successful, UNICEF and partners seek to vaccinate over 148 000 girls within the country both at school and public health centres while urging all parents and guardians allow their children in the age bracket 9-14 years to be vaccine.
Madam Jallow also informed that, UNICEF has also created an electronic engagement platform for the media or interested people to know more about the children and interact with experts by texting either Africell or Qcell to 1234.
The Deputy Manager under the Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI) Sidat Fofana following a study in Senegal on the impact of the vaccine to young girls in the fight against cervical cancer was a success resulting to the introduction in The Gambia urged parents and guardians to allow girls within the ages of 9 to 14 to be immunized.
‘Usually people who don’t understand or those who go round spreading false rumor, we want them to know that there is no ill intention behind this vaccination, the only purpose is to protect the girls from cervical cancer’ he noted.
He recalled on the recent exercised done in Brikama was a huge success and call on other who were missed to use the opportunity to be vaccinnes as prevention is better than cure.
Delivering a powerpoint presentation, The HPV Focal Person at the Ministry of Health, Mamanding Kinteh, the ministry objectives include quality health care to all and sundry especially children by closely working with WHO and UNICEF and partners to vet for vaccines that could help safe children against any kind of preventive sickness include HPV
Mamanding She mentioned that, the scaling up the HPV vaccination nationally, is the first of its kind conducted by the Health Ministry and will be available to all public hospital including New Yundum Health Centre, Banjulnding Health Centre, Jarra Soma Health Centre, SOS village, RVTH, Kanifing General Hospital, Essau, and public school.
