The Association of Sheep Herders, Sammagi Association , on Thursday 9th January, 2020 held a media briefing on their work and objectives and preparations for the upcoming international trade fair to be held in Dakar.
Sammagi, which has a membership of over 200 registered livestock breeders, was established in 2016 by a group of Gambian farmers and entrepreneurs, to make livestock products such as meat, affordable for ordinary Gambians. And, in doing so, complimenting government’s efforts in attaining food self-sufficiency targets.
Babucarr Jeng, Sammagi, secretary general of the association, says their prime objective is to cut down on the importation of livestock products, especially during the festive period. Let Gambians know that their sons and daughters are into livestock and we are working tirelessly to make sure one day Gambia will not import sheep or sheep products.
The president of the association Alieu Lowe, called for more support from central government. He adds that the invitation to take part in the upcoming trade fair in Dakar by their Senegalese counterparts, shows that the association’s work is being recognized beyond the Gambia.
The Trade fair will be held from the 17th to the 27th January 2020 and will be attended by both Regional and International Sheep Breeding Associations and the Gambia is attending it for the first time.
Ebrima Jallow, president of Gambia Sheep Breeders Association, says they are confronted with many challenges. He revealed that government is yet to offer any support to the association and also called on young people to venture into commercial livestock breeding.
Our Association has met O.J Jallow when he was the Agriculture minister, we met Lamin N. Dibba and also met the present Minister Amie Fabureh. The government has done nothing for us so far, anything we do is done by the members of the Association.
Other speakers included Alieu Badjie, a member of the Gambia breeders Association, and Sammagi members, Alhagie Gajo and Naffie Lowe.
